This virtually unknown cultivar was brought to the US for an American Hosta Society auction back in the early 2000s, but never managed to get into the nursery trade. Carex 'Echigo Nishiki' forms a dense 5' wide patch in 20 years, when grown in rich, moist, organic soil.
